Transference
2018
“Contraband” group show at Washington Project for the Arts, Washington DC, 2018
Curated by Rodrigo Carazas
During “Contraband” context, a collective project realized in Washington DC, “Transference” is focused on the process; the idea of contrabanding an object, suggesting an analogy about the transition of raw materials extracted from a particular territory, being transported, manipulated and suitable for commercialization to finally being returned to its original territory as a new product. (Case of cocaine, gold, diamonds, etc.)
This piece begins with a personal anecdote about the extraction and stealing of a road sign in the city of Miami, which was covered up and illegally transported to the city of Lima where it was worked to acquire a new and aesthetical appearance. In “Transference” there are preserved original features of the material like letters, colors, and shapes (part of itself rest intact) and at the same time, new ones overlap with the final purpose of being returned to the territory where it was extracted to be exhibited, in this case, the USA.
